Why EDC

Closer, faster, quieter — by design.

Austin Executive sits in northeast Austin, closer to the Apple, Tesla, and Samsung campuses than AUS — and a 20-minute drive from downtown without highway congestion. Because it serves only general aviation, there's no shared ramp with commercial widebodies, no commercial taxi queue, and no TSA.

For 80% of our domestic charters out of Austin, EDC is the better choice. The exceptions: heavy jets (which require AUS's longer runway) and international flights needing customs.

Private Jet Austin Executive Airport EDC

Private jet charter at Austin Executive Airport (EDC) — the private aviation favorite

Private jet travel at Austin Executive Airport — EDC, ICAO KEDC — is the quiet preference of most Austin charter regulars. EDC is a dedicated general aviation field in northeast Austin with a single FBO (Austin Executive) that runs the entire airport. There is no commercial traffic, no TSA, no shared taxi queue with Southwest 737s, and no commercial baggage claim crowd. From the parking lot, through the lounge, to the aircraft door, the typical EDC departure is under fifteen minutes — sometimes under ten when the crew is already onboard.

For private aviation passengers in the Domain, Apple, Tesla, Samsung, Dell, and Oracle Austin campuses corridor, plus Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, and Leander, EDC also wins decisively on drive time. It is closer to most North Austin tech employment than AUS, and the drive avoids the 45/I-35 commuter mess on the way to Bergstrom. For roughly 80% of the domestic Austin private jet trips we book — light or midsize jet, no international customs, no heavy iron — Austin Executive Airport is the better choice.

Why North Austin executives prefer EDC

EDC sits in Pflugerville/northeast Austin, roughly 7 miles from Apple's Austin campus, 9 miles from the Domain, and 12 miles from Tesla's Gigafactory Texas — versus 18–25 miles to AUS depending on traffic. For an executive leaving the Domain at 8 a.m., the difference between EDC and AUS can be 25–40 minutes of drive time, which is often more than the entire airside boarding savings of private vs commercial. That math is why so many Austin tech leaders default to EDC for short-haul private jet charter.

The drive avoids I-35 and the commercial airport access loops; SH-130 to FM 685 puts you at Austin Executive's gate without ever touching downtown traffic.

The single-FBO experience at Austin Executive

Austin Executive is the only FBO at EDC, which is unusual and entirely a feature. One operator owns the lounge, the ramp, the fueling, the catering coordination, and the ground transportation handoff. There is no inter-FBO traffic, no shared taxiway with commercial widebodies, and no waiting for a ramp position behind a Boeing pushback. The crew lounge, conference space, and passenger lounge are purpose-built for business aviation rather than retrofitted from a commercial terminal.

Catering can be coordinated with any Austin restaurant, ground transportation can stage at the ramp, and pet handling is straightforward. EDC's culture is "service-first" in a way that AUS's dual-FBO setup, by structural necessity, sometimes is not.

Runway, aircraft, and EDC's one real limitation

EDC's runway is 6,025 feet. That comfortably handles every light jet, midsize jet, and super-midsize jet category in private aviation — Phenom 300, Citation CJ3, Citation XLS+, Hawker 800, Challenger 350, Praetor 600, Citation Longitude. Where EDC runs out of runway is heavy iron: Gulfstream G450/G550/G650, Falcon 2000, Challenger 605, and any VIP airliner (BBJ, Lineage 1000). Those need AUS.

For roughly 80% of the Austin private jet charter trips we book, the appropriate aircraft is light, midsize, or super-midsize — meaning EDC is the right departure airport. For coast-to-coast trips with large groups or international hops, AUS becomes the right choice.

TSA, security, and arrival workflow at EDC

EDC is private aviation only. There is no TSA, no millimeter-wave scanner, no liquid restrictions, and no boarding pass control. Arriving passengers drive onto the FBO ramp, walk from the lounge to the aircraft (or directly from the car for high-value clients), and depart. Crew handles the manifest, identity verification, and baggage. The entire process from car to wheels-up routinely runs under fifteen minutes.

For passengers carrying high-value items, sensitive documents, instruments, or pets, EDC is dramatically less stressful than any commercial-airport TSA workflow.

EDC during SXSW, F1, and ACL

When AUS becomes slot-controlled and ramp-saturated during F1 weekend, SXSW, or ACL weekends, EDC becomes the quiet hero of Austin private aviation. We routinely route group charters and corporate clients through EDC during those weeks specifically to avoid Bergstrom's ramp congestion. EDC does fill up during these events too — book early — but capacity is generally less constrained than AUS for the same week.

For background on event routing, read our piece on why private jet groups route through EDC for ACL.

How to choose between EDC and AUS

Default to EDC for: domestic flights, light/midsize/super-midsize jets, North Austin pickups, F1/SXSW/ACL week congestion avoidance, and any trip where you want the fastest car-door-to-wheels-up time. Default to AUS for: international customs in either direction, heavy or ultra-long-range aircraft, connection from a commercial arrival, hangar storage for multi-day visits, and South Austin pickups.
